The donor of the landed properties, Sri Ittira Gervasis Kulangara, had very clearly stated the intention that to establish an Orphanage and a Brothers congregation to look after the children in the orphanage. Thus the Holy Family Orphanage which was started in 1913 near Ernakulam Archbishop’s House was shifted to Mookkannur with the name Sacred Heart Balanagar (Orphanage), and was entrusted to the responsibility of Brothers’ Congregation which was started in 1931 by His Grace Mar Augustine Kandathil. The intention of this orphanage was to look after the poor and destitute children, especially boys. The inmates here hail from far and near and belong to various caste and creed. They are given free food, accommodation, education, clothing, healthcare and above all formation of character. They study in various classes from Primary to High School. They leave the institute only after their schooling  and a few after their higher studies like technical studies, college education and other job-oriented skill training and when they are enabled themselves to find a job for their living. But, due to the new rule, we have stopped the orphanage and here we conduct Boys’ Home for the school going students.
